lesson 2

Past perfect

💗The "past perfect" refers to a time before the recent past. It is used to indicate that an event occurred before another in the past. It does not matter which of the events is mentioned first, because the tense makes clear the temporal order in which it happened.

(oh no how complicated it is😓)

it's not complicated!

let's see let's go by parts, first by the structure

affirmative structure

Subject + auxiliary had + verb in the past + complement

💗They had studied English before they went to London → Ellos habían estudiado inglés antes de irse a Londres

💗He had read the book that you gave me yesterday. → El había leído el libro que me diste ayer

negative structure

Subject + auxiliary had + not + past tense verb + complement

💗She hadn’t been in Europe before → Ella no había estado en Europa antes

💗They hadn’t finished their homework → Ellos no habían terminado su tarea

interrogative structure

Auxiliary had + subject + verb in the past + complement ?

💗Had they studied English before they went to London? → ¿Ellos habían estudiado inglés antes de irse a Londres?

💗Had you ever flown before the trip to France? → ¿Habías volado antes del viaje a Francia?
